Aging Harvested Deer
Accurately estimating the ages of harvested deer is a vital component of trophy deer management programs. Various methods of estimating the age of white-tailed deer are available, such as the familiar “tooth wear and replacement” method and cementum annuli aging. Cementum annuli aging is by far the most accurate method (See our article titled “ How old is that buck” at deerhuntersparadise.com for more information on cementum annuli aging); however, the wear and replacement method is useful for placing deer into broad age categories . The SWS staff is ready to help you decide which method best for your management program and assist with all your aging needs.
